Melocactus – Turk’s Cap Cactus
🌵🎩
The Melocactus, commonly called the Turk’s Cap Cactus, is a distinctive species known for its round, ribbed bodytopped with a unique cephalium – a reddish, bristly cap that gives the plant its name. Over time, this cap produces tiny pink flowers and bright red fruit, making it one of the most unusual and ornamental cacti.
Key Features:
✔ Iconic “turk’s cap” cephalium that grows with age
✔ Produces pink flowers and red fruits from the cap
✔ Compact and architectural cactus, perfect for pots
✔ Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant
✔ A true collector’s cactus with a unique appearance
Care Instructions:
-
Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight – ideal for sunny windowsills or conservatories
-
Watering: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely before watering again
-
Soil: Best in a well-draining cactus/succulent mix
-
Feeding: Fertilise once a month in spring and summer with cactus feed
-
Temperature: Prefers 20–30°C; keep above 12°C and protect from frost
-
Growth: Typically grows 10–20 cm tall, with the cephalium expanding over time
🌿 Tip: Once the cap (cephalium) forms, the plant focuses on flowering and fruiting rather than growing taller – a sign of maturity and good care.
