Orchids (Orchidaceae) – Elegant & Exotic Blooms

Orchids are stunning, long-lasting flowering plants known for their delicate beauty and diverse varieties. They make elegant houseplants and are surprisingly easy to care for when given the right conditions. Popular varieties include Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid), Cattleya, Dendrobium, and Oncidium.

Care Guide:

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Phalaenopsis orchids thrive in medium light, while Cattleya and Dendrobium prefer brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves.

Watering: Water once a week (less in winter). Allow roots to dry slightly between waterings. Always use a well-draining orchid mix, and avoid letting the roots sit in water.

Humidity: Orchids love high humidity (50–70%). Mist occasionally or place near a pebble tray to maintain moisture.

Temperature: Ideal temperatures are 18–24°C (65–75°F) during the day and slightly cooler at night. Keep away from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil & Feeding: Use a specialized orchid potting mix (bark-based) for aeration. Feed with a weak orchid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.

Blooming & Pruning: Flowers last for several weeks to months. After blooming, trim the flower spike above a node to encourage new blooms.

Common Problems & Solutions:

Wrinkled leaves? Underwatering or low humidity.

Yellow leaves? Overwatering or too much direct sunlight.

No blooms? Needs more light or a temperature drop at night.
