Cactus – Prickly Pear (Opuntia spp.) 🌵🍐

The Prickly Pear Cactus, from the Opuntia family, is an iconic desert plant with flattened, paddle-like segments and a rugged yet beautiful look. It's hardy, low-maintenance, and in the right conditions, may even reward you with vibrant blooms or edible fruits.

Key Features:

✔ Sculptural, segmented growth with spines or glochids
✔ Can produce bright yellow, pink, or red flowers
✔ Often followed by edible fruit (called “tunas”) in mature plants
✔ Perfect for sunny windowsills, patios, or desert-themed displays
✔ Extremely drought-tolerant and long-lived

Care Instructions:

• Light: Needs full sun – a south-facing window or outdoor spot is ideal

• Watering: Water sparingly – allow soil to fully dry out between waterings

• Soil: Use a gritty, cactus-specific mix for excellent drainage

• Feeding: Feed with cactus fertiliser in spring and summer only

• Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, but some species can tolerate mild frost

• Handling: Be cautious of spines or fine glochids – wear gloves when repotting
