Mature Size: Approximately 12–18 inches (30–60 cm) in height
Pet Freindly: No

☀️ Light Requirements

Place your Alocasia 'Red Secret' in bright, indirect light. It thrives near north or east-facing windows. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and diminish their vibrant color. If natural light is limited, especially during shorter winter days in Sheffield, consider supplementing with grow lights to maintain optimal growth conditions.

💧 Watering

Maintain consistently moist but not soggy soil. Water the plant when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf browning or wilting. Using room-temperature, filtered water is beneficial, especially in areas with hard tap water.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature: Keep the environment between 18–27°C (65–80°F). Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 13°C (55°F).

  • Humidity: Aim for 60–80% humidity. If your indoor air is dry, especially during winter, use a humidifier or place a water tray near the plant to increase moisture levels.

🪴 Soil & Repotting

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, airy soil mix rich in organic matter. A recommended blend includes equal parts of indoor potting mix, perlite, and coco coir.

  • Repotting: Repot every 2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. The best time to repot is during the spring.

🌱 Fertilization

During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plant monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in the dormant winter months to prevent nutrient buildup and potential root damage.

✂️ Pruning & Propagation

  • Pruning: Trim any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's health and appearance.

  • Propagation: Propagate through division of rhizomes or corms during repotting. Ensure each division has at least one growth point and some roots before planting in fresh soil.

🐛 Common Pests & Problems

  • Pests: Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

  • Leaf Issues:

    • Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering.

    • Brown Edges: May indicate low humidity or excessive direct sunlight.

    • Drooping Leaves: Could be due to underwatering or sudden temperature changes.

🌿 Additional Tips

  • Dormancy: Alocasia 'Red Secret' may enter a dormant phase in cooler months, showing slowed growth or leaf loss. Reduce watering during this period and resume regular care as new growth appears in spring.

  • Cleaning: Dust the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to ensure optimal photosynthesis.

  • Support: As the plant grows, it may require staking to support its upright growth.
